I made the mistake of reading pin-ying and translating it into mandarin. I had no idea chow mein was crunchy noodle.... go figure, I thought it was regular yellow noodle sauted. Anyhow, it was gross because there was no flavoring in it. I tried my friend's "spaghetti," it was the noodles I wanted, but with ketchup... as the marinara sauce..? Gross, again.... Soup... tasteless... GROSS and watermelon juice was in a cup FULLLLL of ice for 3bucks. =(. I was so sad and still hungry... I couldn't eat it because since it had no taste, I put soy sauce in it.. and at the end, I was basically EATING SOY SAUCE =(.
I give it 2 stars because I'm willing to give it another chance... The fried rice at the table next to ours looked good... but I wouldn't be surprised if it was bland as well...
I've been coming here since the old college days, but my trips here slowly dissipated as the food quality decreased. I was craving Chinese cafe style food and remembered that there was a grand reopening sign outside of this place a while back. I couldn't help, but wonder whether it was just a remodel of the restaurant itself or the food/management altogether. Taking a chance we ventured in for lunch one day. We both ordered the lunch specials that came with your choice of a creamy corn soup or standard veggie tomato soup. We got one of each with our backed pork chop over rice and seafood with lobster creme sauce over spaghetti. Surprisingly our food came out pretty fast and our soups were actually steaming hot and quite good. So far so good. Our entrees came out and I loved the baked pork chop over rice. It was hot enough and instead of just one big hunk of meat, there were "mini" pork chops topped with the tomato sauce and cheese. Yum.....Of course this being a signature and standard dish for Chinese cafe restaurants, one would hope they wouldn't screw this dish up!
The not so standard pasta dish I ordered can't be raved about though. There was a 1 to 30 ratio of seafood to noodles and the overall dish was bland and looked like they just sloppily slapped pasta and sauce onto a plate. With the lunch specials you also get a choice of drinks(iced tea, Thai tea, milk tea, etc.) that include free refills which were refilled when finished by our awesome server.
Overall I was impressed with the freshness of most the dishes, temperature, and quality of food/service. A place I will definitely hit up when the cafe craving comes along!

Before I have heard of Yelp, I used to go to this place almost every other weekend with my friends from San Bernadino, back in '06/'07. It was a good late night spot with cheap food and was a bit dated.
Fast forward to '08. After a night of drinks and finding nothing else open, flashbacks from coming here before finally came back to me. Whoa! They've remodeled the place. There's stone, nicer tables/seats, LCD's on the walls (and in the walls). The food to me, was still good as it always has been. It was time for Wes to get my grub on again! I ordered the spicy salt chicken wings and squid, and the Indo fried rice (as suggested by Jill).
The wings were fried right, good size to them and the squid was crispy, not soggy at all. Mmm!! The Indo fried rice had some kick, but still let me enjoy the flavors of the rice, egg, and spices.
I would say the funniest part about eating here that night was the hoochies coming from the club and the things they were wearing. Just, wow, your parents let you go out like that? :x
I would say this place is an Asian Denny's. Prices are reasonable, staff is pretty good for an Asian restaurant, but the BIG difference, the food doesn't suck!!
I can't wait to come back on one of my late night adventures.

i am sorry but this restaurant only looks good, dude....maxim is way better coz the waiters here are all young and inexperienced (i guess?!) that all they do is pick up the plate right after u drop ur fork/ spoon! i put my spoon down to wipe my mouth while i drank my soup and then this one waiter came racing to pick my soup bowl up when it was half full, so i was sorta disturbed. throughout the meal, they kept attempting to collect plates and that was extremely annoying, it's just too often when they suddenly come next to you and pick like a tiny plate up or just try to take your dish (not b/c there were too much ppl too, coz the restaurant was half full when i went today: SUNDAY 7:00pm) weird!
we went in a party of 3 adults and one child and ended up paying around $42 with tips so it was kinda expensive for their bad quality extremely oily food, it wasn't worth it at all and i regret it so bad :[
what a beautiful day!
1. read to kids
2. played like a kid at the park
3. went to the hot springs
4. got to eat here.
wow. the size of the portions is ridiculous. the place seems constantly packed so the service is very hectic. you end up staying there for a long time so don't think it will be a quick in n out. but the place is open late so if you go drink at my usual spot, the nodaj, in the ktown part of the street, you can come here after, to lil china.
i think i had a mound of pork chops. my friends got a combo that had every animal known to man served with pasta and garlic sauce.
it was one of those just great days, where nothing super bad, or out of the ordinary happened. but its one of those days you will talk about for ages. it will be like, remember that one day in the summer we had all that fun? and we went to the hot springs, and rick drank all that caffeine and got hyper, and summit lost a contact and almost killed us on the road, and tony tried to come late to skip the work out, and and and...
its one of those full days for me. a journey, physical cuz of all the driving, and i started out around kids, and ended up around drunk people.
only in ca. ahhhhhhhhh. thats the only noise i've been making all day. ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. not the yell. but when you just relax and your muscles ease up, and all that comes out of that is ahhhh.

Word on the streets was this place was supposed to be the chinese dennys, beijing lawrys, and taiwanese roscos chicken n waffles all rolled up into one nice HK-style cafe, so you bet your ass i was excited to eat here. after hours of scanning the menu, i decided on the hk style seafood porridge. i've been through many bowls of hk-style seafood porridge throughout my life, and this had to be one of the greatest bowls i ever had. just kidding, it was disgusting. it looked like someone vomited into my bowl and added processed seafood into it.
ps
this place is filled with a bunch of chinese thugs/playboys. i felt like i was in menace II society, only replacing all the african american gang-bangers with a bunch of rich chinese "gangsters" that have nothing better to do but loiter around a hk-style cafe and spit sick hk-style freestyles over some hot beats. enter at your own risk.
All in all, pretty mediocre.
The complimentary tomato soup was pretty decent. The alternative, the cream soup, didn't look so great. Cream of what? I really don't know. Isn't it supposed to be cream of chicken, or cream of mushroom, or something? It was just cream. Soup.
I think I ordered some sort of beef stew and won-ton noodle soup. It was not what I expected. There was a small bowl of broth, and a separate plate of thin noodles, won-tons and cubes of fatty beef. The meat was tender and pretty tasty. The noodles were one huge, cohesive clump of angel hair, so it was a battle to extract forkfuls of noodle. Weird aftertaste too.
For dishes that offer a choice of rice or "pasta"... the pasta is spaghetti. Don't expect Chinese noodles of any kind.
The waiter wasn't great. Because the menu items are all numbered, I figured it would be okay to order by number. I was less-than-politely told that I needed to read him the name of the item. Like he couldn't do that himself as a courtesy to the customer. Water refills were slow but eventually came just before we left.
"C" health inspector rating. Generous portions, but so-so prices. You could do better.
I used to come to this Garden Cafe a lot more when I lived in Diamond Bar. Now that I'm further west, I tend to frequent the other ones. But I remember the days when they were open till 4 every night. Those were the good days, when you wouldn't have to worry about where to go for late night eats because you always knew that Garden was there as a choice.
Anyway, they changed the hours a few years back, much to my surprise and disappointment. But it's still open till 4 on weekends, so I guess it's alright. I went back last night after a year or two, and everything was different. They spruced up the interior so that the decor is now a lot more like the Arcadia Garden Cafe - dark wood panelling on the walls and dark wood tables. There is even an lcd tv at each of the booths along the walls. I was duly impressed.
What impressed me more was the food - I remembered it to be good, but not THAT good. Even the fries were good, and that's hard to come by (Cheesecake Factory could never get it right). Sure, everything was drenched in oil, but still, very very flavorful. One of my favorites is gan chao niu he - stirfry beef wide flat rice noodles or whatever it's called. Another favorite is the seafood XO sauce sizzling udon noodles. Their XO sauce is a bit spicy, but sooo good. And if you feel like a sandwich, try their club sandwich. It comes with a side of fries and there is a fried egg in the sandwich which makes it different and so much better.
We sit down at a table at The Boat. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
10 seconds pass.
I tell my friends, "The last time I was here, I got sick."
That's when one of them said, "I know someplace else we can go to." And in less than 5 seconds, we leave and head over to R.H. Garden Cafe.
As we walk up to the front door, I noticed the big red C in the window. "Great. I tell you I got sick at The Boat and you bring me here!?!?!" He says all the great places are usually rated a C. Can't argue with that point, so we head on in.
Garden Cafe has a pretty big menu of Chinese-Americanized dishes. Soups, noodles, pastas (!), curries, rice, etc. There's a section especially for oxtail/ox tongue. We ordered the vegetable curry (comes with either pasta or plain rice), shrimp rice, egg and shrimp rice, pork chops, and chow fun. All the dishes came with either vegetable or a creamy seafood soup. The shrimp rice was standard- fried rice w/ shrimp. The curry was pretty good-- not too spicy, just the plain steamed rice that came with it was left in the rice cooker w/ too much rice and was really gummy. If you order a thai ice tea, you get free refills. Service was a bit slow, but very helpful when flagged down. All in all, a nice place to get together w/ people if you're more interested in them than the food.
Later that night, my stomach felt kinda off, but nowhere near how I felt from The Boat's food. C or no C, Garden Cafe is better in my book.

when late at night, where do you go to eat? fast food restaurants? I prefer these "HKish cafe places", whether the seafood porridge or pretty much everything is not bad. This place is open very close to 24-7 so quite convenient. Similar to Maxim but I prefer Garden, why?
because some dishes at maxim is bad in my opinion, too greasy, when at night, try to stay on the lighter side or I have trouble sleeping, if you know what I mean.

Garden Cafe is like a late night booty call. It's somewhere you wanna be to get all your last minute late night cravings out of the way.
I've been here twice for the first half of this week and needed some TLC in the form of comfort food. After getting ass-pummeled by the night ice at Mountain High and experiencing an interesting NYE outing, I needed sustenance that goes beyond a full belly. Both times, I was in need of some edible adulation and Garden Cafe was there to oblige.
It's not that I don't enjoy more adventurous types of food, but a large frickin' bowl of wonton egg noodle soup with shrimp dumplings is something my fledgling love handles won't regret the following morning. It tastes nothing special, but my body is overwhelmed with warm satisfaction.
To drink, I had a tall glass of ginseng tea with honey. The taste is a tad too sweet, but the distinct bitterness from the cut up bits of ginseng root evens things out. I just don't know why they don't serve hot drinks in a mug with a handle.
Soup and hot tea. Is there anything better on a late freezing night? The combo provides me a feeling of being embraced by a warm blanket that Linus would be envious of.

Okay, I come here often. It's right next to my congregation and after getting my fill of spiritual food I go for some physical food. This place is great, opened from 6am to 3am. They only close for 3 hours. Their food is a mix of Chinese & American. I know it sounds weird but it totally works. My favorites are the sizzling beef udon noodles, chicken pan fried noodles with chinese greens, yang chow fried rice, and the pork chops or fried chicken with mash potatoes veggies, and a side of spaghetti. They also have great soups and baked pastas. The prices are very reasonable running between $5-8. The have over 192 items on the menu. They have several other locations in Arcadia and Alhambra. Enjoy.

Oddly enough, my favorite dish from this establishment is this one tomato-based vegetable soup that "might" be a borscht. On some nights that we've visited, it is a complimentary starter. When my friends don't want it, I take theirs.
When I'm chilling the homies past 1:00AM, I go with Yang Chow Fried Rice and an order of Deep-fried Squid w/Spicy Salt. The squid goes well with ketchup!
Like many of the other reviewers mentioned, if you have friends that are "iffy" about the seemingly strange world of exotic Asian foods, this place has a fair amount of American offerings in its menu. I marveled at the versatility of this place when I spotted a Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich on the menu. Yes, if you're "guai lo" eating compatriots cannot understand how Minced Beef with Egg over Rice can be a tasty treat, they can have French Fries and a Ham & Cheese Sandwich!
Whenever I go with a full-on meal, I order the Ribeye Steak with Black Pepper Sauce. It comes with steamed vegetables, rice (or pasta), and some mashed potatoes. They may be made from a powdered mix, but the gravy overshadows it.
From time-to-time, I'll drive by and notice that there's either a C or B rating posted up on the window. For the most part, this has been what's driven me to go to Maxim instead. And good luck getting drink refills on a timely basis.
Pro: One of the earliest Hong Kong style fusion restaurants in LA. Open late at night. Dining area is recently renovated. One of the few places that you can order a hot cup of Yuan Yang (50% coffee + 50% black tea.) + 3 stars.
Con: Have you actually ever eaten their "western" dishes? They include such atrocities as super salty minestrone, clam chowder that's 80% water, and spaghetti with "red" sauce that may or may not be tomato based. - 1 star
Additional Con: Health rating of C (Generally acceptable in food handling practices and overall general food facility maintenance.) Some people don't mind. But the differences in an "A" rated and "C" rated kitchen can be startling. - 1 star

it's garden. i love them for their indo fried rice (yes, rick.. it's not REAL indo fried rice...whatev...i still love it), deep fried chicken wings with spicy salt, and spanish coffee.
i haven't been to this location in years. i normally go to the one in alhambra. it's a lot nicer in here after all the remodeling. so much space. so much room.
but for some reason, the food taste better in alhambra. maybe i just don't like all that space.

With all the selection available in Rowland Heights... I will just say this -- if Red Ant, Boston Cafe, Boston Kitchen, and Maxim are *ALL* closed... THEN will you consider stepping food here.
Food, not much you can expect, it's cafe food. A fair amount of selection. But the service... GOSH... it's hooooooooooorible. Now that Boston Kitchen is directly next to them, I hope it's just a matter of time that this place will flop on its own.
Not much for me to add. Period.
For me, unless there's absolutely no other alternative (e.g. skipping this meal? maybe?), then would I eat here.
They recently remodeled and looks pretty nice now. BUT don't let their new look fool you! Their food is still only mediocre.
The food never comes hot. It seems like its been sitting in the kitchen for over 15 minutes. Their food isn't bad but it's not good either. The good thing is, they open late. Since I'm a sucker for hong kong style cafes, I still come here occasionally.
I used to live and die for Garden Cafe on Friday nights at 2am. My staples were always:
- Spicy Squid
- Beef Chow Fun
It didn't matter that they had a D on their window at one point... I would just always think: not applicable to my food LOL But I noticed that the nicer their plates got, the quality of food was on the decline. Squid came mushy, Beef Chow Fun oilier than normal (if that's even possible).
Anyway - here's the worst story! There was about 6 of us eating there late night and randomly after eating the fried rice - my friend broke out in massive hives and heat rashes!!!! I would say it was an allergic reaction, but it was one of his staple dishes and he has never experienced that before....
Considering I was 1 foot away from being poisoned, I would have to say: STAY AWAY and BE VERY SCARED..
You're better off going to Banana Bay across the street.... Or there's a good chance you'll find some yummy goodness at Life Plaza.

according to frank this place just had a major face lift. it was nice, each table along the wall had it's own mini flat panel tv. they were all playing FSN.. pretty cool, i guess. i mean if you just want to watch tv and not talk to your friends.
we came here after going night boarding at mt. high. i had the shrimp curry, frank - the pork chops, and dave g. - wonton soup.
my curry was really good.. came out fast so i was a little worried. but when you get stuffed off of shrimp you know they've given you a lot.
frank hooked me up with a pork chop which was pretty good. i had to pull some "ick" out of the meat, but for 8 bucks you get three big chops. not bad.
the selling point of this joint is that it's close to foot massages and it's open very late. their menu is HUGE so i can't see ever running out of things to try.
it was good.. i won't be going out of my way to come back, but i'm glad i know it exists and would go back again.

Garden Cafe is one those typical Hong Kong Cafe's, they have all kind of dishes you pretty much can think of for Chinese food gone Americanized.
This place used to be one of my favorite spot to go. I think I've been here so much that I've tried almost all of the dishes you see on the menu. I reccomend their fried rice, it's delicious and you get your money worth for that huge amount of food. I like their Won Ton Dry Noodle too. When I'm in the mood for steak and low on cash, this is the place I will end up going, it's only a lil over ten bucks for a big piece of steak. Well it's not Morton or Ruth Chris, but it's good enough and edible, after all, you get what you pay for.
But I wouldn't reccomend coming in here on a Friday or Saturday, it gets really packed and it's not worthed the wait because there are many other good Chinese restaurants in Rowland Heights.
This place is cheap, it's open late, and the food is okay so i give it the average 3.
I did find a piece of carrot in my boba milk tea this last visit though but no harm done, so I'm willing to overlook it.
At least the "C" grade that they used to try to hide on their window is now a "B" and they're now proudly displaying it. Go Garden!

Garden's one of the many places in R.H. that's open during the wee hours of the morning. It's also one of the placed on my friend's "Must eat when I go home" for the food and probably the tradition of doing so.
This time I noticed, hidden behind the bench that's located outside the place is the "C" grade. Low and behold, Garden has finally met the proper Chinese Establishment grade of C for Chinese! But those grades shouldn't matter as long as the food still tastes good right?
One thing I like most about garden is their pretty big selection of different fried rice and noodles. Their Fu Zhou fried rice is really good as it's topped with some kind of brown sauce with seafood flavoring of some sort. The Pineapple Shrimp fried rice is great is you like the slight sweetness of pineapples in your fried rice. Yang Chow fried rice is the norm, but tasty as well. The XO Sauce Seafood Udon was really good as the noodles were at the right chewyness, a bit oily, but flavorful nonetheless. Indo Style Chow Fun was a dish made of flat rice noodles fried with shrimp, chicken, some bellpeppers, and chilli peppers for a hint of spicyness. So far, nothing I've ordered here has disappointed. They give generous portions at prices that won't dent your wallet.
For drinks, lemon iced tea is always refreshing. Iced coffee is a bit on the milkier side for me--sometimes looks more like milk tea than coffee shade. It's free refills too!
If you're hungry and passing through Rowland at 1am or so, stop by garden to satisfy any hunger cravings.

Seriously, DO NOT GO HERE! The food is pretty good, its the late night 2am type chinese food you go to BUT this place in rowland heights just sickens me. I distinctly remember two different occassions where a group of our friends were eating and my friend noticed a hair in her milk tea. Not THAT big of a deal right? Unfortunately it was curly....not the type of hair you see on a person's head. I kid you not....I am deathly serious about it, it was two seperate times i've been there that we've found hair like that in the milk tea.
We found it halfway through our meal, complained and they offered to comp only her drink even though we all ordered the milk tea and a meal. I really don't even need to explain the disgust and mood at that moment. Another one of my never-go-back restaurants.
Cheap, good portions, decent Chinese cafe food. Friends love some of the noodle plates especially the sizzling pan ones. Even the traditional Chinese plates like chicken and black bean rice plates are good because it comes on top of egg (sort of) fried rice.
Oh yes speaking of how they recently got switched to a "B" rating, well my friend was in there during a surprise food inspection which caused the entire restaurant a delay of an hour before anyone got their food, lol! Which meant they probably had to start from scratch what was not deemed acceptable. I think they got their "B" after that.
One of the spots we used to hit after clubbing during our clubbing days if we didn't feel like eating at Denny's and if the Boat or Banana Bay are already closed. They are open pretty late. I think until 4am, not sure though. But when I do go here, I would order their cornish hen.
Like other Hk cafes in the area, great portions, great prices, and wonderful hours. I loved this place as a college student and I still sometimes come here after work for to go orders. They recently changes the menu so my fav ox tail curry is now gone...I'd recommend this place over maxim for taste but not selection.

This place isn't as good as some other chinese cafes in the area I've tried, but it's okay. I've been there twice, this being my second time, but so far all I REALLY enjoyed was the avocado smoothie. I've had the pork cutlets and the deep fried pork chop w/ spicy salt but I like the one at Life Plaza better (plus Life Plaza's cheaper and you get the 3 for 12 deal).
They do have generous portions though, but it's way too much when it comes to the pork cutlet dish b/c it's battered and fried. My husband said he felt gross afterward. And I agree it's not as good as the Garden Cafe in Alhambra.
I'm reading about trying the American food here, but when I only venture out to Rowland for two reasons-- cheap, asian, comfort food and sometimes cute stuff! Otherwise it's LA =)
Among all the choices for cheap dining in this area, I have to admit this is where you'll get the fastest dining experience. This place is the perfect example of how Asians would do Denny's: brightly lit, open late with quick service. I always love to try something different at this place, but (I have to admit) my all-time faves would be the salt & pepper calamari and the beef egg on rice. With entrees averaging around 6 bucks, you just can't beat that!

I recently had the spinach and baked sole covered in a creamy sauce served over noodles and it brought me back to inebriated bliss. Their noodles are pretty scrumptuous, despite what you might think of a Chinese cafe serving American style food.
Who else likes to mix ketchup and sugar, pour it over noodles and serve it as spaghetti with marinara sauce?
Or ever try mixing some cornstarch and water and serving it up as cream corn soup?
Well R.H. Garden has and they are damn proud of it. Try their traditional baked bolognese dish (a hearty red meat sauce with melted cheese served over ... what else? spaghetti), or their lobster thermadore (lobster baked with a cream sauce and topped with cheese.)
If you're looking for Atkins, well he died. But garden has found the perfect remedy for his funeral - a sizzling black pepper steak, or sizzling steak with mushroom gravy sauce.

Cheap, quick, fast, and fulfilling. Just like me! I mean, just the way I like post-inebriation food runs. You're never gonna get Iron Chef Chinese food at 2am on a Saturday night, and Garden Cafe is no exception.
Regardless, for us Eastsiders this is a guaranteed stop after a hard core crazy night of book reading. Hell yeah book reading! This is a prime spot because of their cheap, quick, fast, and fulfilling food and service. Don't you ever listen to me?
The house or seafood with XO sauce fried rice is good for you unadventurous folk but we generally get beef stew on rice, or the pork chop, or the calamari (so awesome), and I've tried the spinach and fish which is pretty damn good.

Definitely my favorite Asian cafe in the RH area. Garden has the lowest price for both lunch and dinner and it's very tasty. Their price range is very reasonable for lunch from $4.95 - $7.95 with a select drink from their list for only $1.25 more.
I choose Garden over Boston and Maxim who are their competitor in terms of price and quality of food.
